Written by our daughter, Alicia, in her middle school years back in 2008 (age 14). Recorded in 2013 at the age of 19.

Dark make-up on beautiful eyes.
Red scratch marks on her beautiful skin.
Purple bruises on her soft clean face.
How could we let her do this? Self-inflicted pain.

We pretend we don't know her as she sits all alone.
We never think to ask, "How are you today?"
If we'd only realize all it takes is "hi"
She wouldn't be alone with this Self-inflicted pain.

Thoughts of suicide. Writings on her wall.
Messages of hate to herself.
But do we hear her as she screams in her head;
As she sits in our classes wishing she was dead?
No one looking as she cuts more skin.
How could we let her do this? Self-inflicted pain.

We pretend we don't know her as she sits all alone.
